Updating DSM for my Synology DS920+

The purpose of this blog post is to provide the guidance and the steps needed to update the DSM (DiskStation Manager) on my Synology DS920+. DSM is the operating system that powers every Synology NAS. It’s use cases includes Multimedia, File Management, Productivity, Data Protection, Virtualization, Surveillance, and much more!

In order to determine which DSM version you’re currently running and what version is available for download, please log into your Synology NAS, select Control Panel, followed by Update & Restore. As you can see from the image below, I’m currently on v7.0.1-42218 (released last October) and Update 2 (released on 1/13/2022) for this version is now available for download. You’ll also receive a notification defined as a System Event (upper right hand corner on the Synology Desktop to inform of the available update.

To proceed with the update, select Download. You’ll then be notified the Update is ready to be installed under Notifications. To proceed, select Update Now.

When prompted to, select Yes to proceed with the installation. Do NOT power off your NAS during the installation process.

Typically, the updates will not take as much time as indicated. When the update is complete, the Synology Login screen appears. Next, you can confirm the successful installation of the update under Notifications or in the Synology Control Panel.

DSM Version is up-to-date

If I missed anything, please let me know. Also, please checkout similar blog posts on the Synology NAS series from Chris Childerhose and Ian Anderson. My Synology related blog posts can be found here.

If you’re interested in learning more about the DS920+, I would highly recommend contacting Synology using the Media Inquiry form.
